Heritage
Vernonia was settled in 1874 by Clark Parker from Ohio who came to farm the land. The soil was fertile, the climate mild and there was an abundance of streams and wildlife. With the towering old-growth timber, logging became a thriving industry in the mid-1920s.
Things To Do
Ride a Bike
Vernonia is home to the Banks-Vernonia Linear Trail. The trail, built on an abandoned railroad bed, is 21 miles long and connects to the Crown-Zellerbach Trail.
Kick Back in a Campground
Anderson Park, in downtown Vernonia, has full RV hookups and a horse arena where Rock Creek and the Nehalem River meet. Airport Park, next to the Nehalem River, airport and golf course, hosts camping with no hookups. Hawkins Park is the home of Dewey Pool, an old fashioned swimming hole and kids' pool, as well as swing sets, ball fields, a gazebo and the Cabin in the Woods.
Join our Jamboree
The Annual August Vernonia Friendship Jamboree includes a logging show, fishing derby, parade, antique car show and live music.
Spend a Day at the Lake
Vernonia Lake offers boating and fishing and has a playground, restrooms and a boat ramp. A paved walking trail encircles the lake and connects to Webb Way where you can feed the ducks.
Getting Here
From the north end of Scappoose on Highway 30, turn up the Scapppose-Vernonia Road 20 miles to Highway 47. Turn left and follow the signs 3.5 miles into Vernonia.
